PASSACAGLIA at the Große Galerie of the Alpe Adria University of Klagenfurt
The presentation of twelve “main clauses” and twelve “subordinate clauses”– works dating from 2012 to 2019 – offers signs/kanji of “Heart/Soul/Spirit,” “The Self,” “Flowing,” and “Infinite.” The motifs of the paintings can be experienced as a visual “Basso Continuo” permeating a musical passacaglia: repeating specific themes in variations and continuing ...
The variations of any of the themes can be identified as we pass the paintings and get impressions of the individual canvasses and also experience the space in between. The individual concepts/signs on these tempera paintings are dislocated, turned around, or mirrored. The paintings are arranged in a kind of circle at two levels and correlate to each other in a syllogistic, antinomian dialogue.
For example, we see how the notion of “Self” can be reconceptualized/reconfigured in an attempt to expand boundaries of routine thinking and provide an opportunity for a new experience. It means raising existential questions through painting, exploring these questions, and finding new approaches and insights in the process.
